Life for the disciples of Jesus had over a three and one half year period been flooded with meaning, but now, as they shared a final Passover meal with their Master, He informed them that He was leaving and that where He was going they could not come.Would the emptiness return? Would life again seem hopeless? Seeking to encourage them He explained that, in His absence their importance would actually increase . . .“Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing” He told them. “And they will do even greater things than these because I go to the Father” (John 14:12). How can this be? they must have wondered. “I will ask the Father,” He went on to explain, “and He will give you another Helper. You know Him for he lives with you and shall be in you” (John 14:16, 17). For the believer yet today, this is our assurance. Help has come! Regarding the important work that Christ seeks to continue through His followers, we have help! And, to the lost of our fallen world, in and through Him Who now resides in us and works through us, we have the help that they long for as well.
